On June 27, 2024 a delegation of three senior officials from Shandong Agricultural University (SDAU), China, visited Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) to explore potential research and academic collaborations. The delegation included Professor Guangsheng Li, Director of the CPC Publicity Department; Professor Juanguo Ju, Dean of the College of Public Administration; and Professor Haiyun Zhang, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office.

In the morning, the delegation met with BSMRAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Giashuddin Miah, followed by a discussion meeting with high officials of BSMRAU, including Deans, Directors, and Department Heads, at the Academic Council Hall. Both universities showcased their respective programs and areas of excellence in education and research, identifying potential collaboration opportunities.

The discussion topics included joint research; exchange of faculty, students, and scientific information; joint seminars and workshops; and other mutually agreed academic programs. Following the meeting, the delegation visited the BSMRAU library, advanced research laboratories, and research fields at the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, GIS and Remote Sensing, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences.

In the afternoon, further discussions were held to pinpoint specific areas for joint research and academic programs. Both parties expressed high admiration for each other’s research and educational advancements and identified immediate collaborative research topics, including:

  • Development of climate-resilient wheat varieties (high temperature and salinity tolerant, disease-resistant, etc.).
  • Research on soybeans and various horticultural crops.
  • Harnessing genomics and phenomics (GIS, UAV, Remote Sensing) for crop improvement.
  • Joint international workshops and conferences on important issues.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the collaboration, ideally during the upcoming visit of the Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh to China. BSMRAU and SDAU anticipate that these collaborative efforts will enhance their research and educational outcomes. The SDAU team will initiate the identified collaborations after consulting with relevant colleges and faculty members. The Director of International Affairs at BSMRAU and the Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office at SDAU will develop the minutes of the discussions and facilitate the implementation of the agreements between the two universities.
