Dr. M. Abdul Karim was born in 15 June 1959 and now is a Professor of the Department of Agronomy. is a PhD from Kyoto University, Japan. He has a wide range of experience in teaching, research, and rural development and extension services. Dr. Karim started his career as a Scientist in the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). During his service in BARI Dr. Karim worked on the development of crop management practices. He developed packages of production practices on oilseeds, cereals and fiber crops. In his PhD work in Kyoto University Dr. Karim gained excellence on analysis of crop growth processes under stressful environment. During post-doctoral courses in Switzerland and Japan Dr. Karim devoted himself to learn to improve crop growth under marginal conditions. Before joining University he was working as an Agriculture Coordinator in an international NGO, RDRS, in the northern Bangladesh. In RDRS Dr. Karim was responsible for the dissemination of modern crop management technologies to the farmers. He is now a professor of Agronomy, and responsible for teaching and supervising MS and PhD students at the Agronomy Department of Bangabandhu Agricultural University, Gazipur. His direction of research is to understand the adaptation mechanisms of crops under environmental stress conditions. The present thrust of his work is on the crop X environment interaction, especially response of C3 plants under combined effects of elevated CO2 and salinity/ water stress/ plant nutrients. He was appointed as a visiting professor at the Kagoshima University, Japan in 2005. As a professor of Kagoshima University, Dr. Karim taught Farming Systems in the South Asia at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
