Welcome to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), a leading institution committed to its vision of providing excellence in education and cutting-edge research to produce quality graduates capable of handling both local and global emerging challenges in agriculture. The institute has earned recognition as a `Centre of Excellence’ in quality agricultural education and research, being the first institution in the country to fully implement the academic calendar based North American Course-Credit System.

BSMRAU was started in 1998 by upgrading the Institute of Post-graduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), which was set up in 1991 as an autonomous institution by upgrading Bangladesh College of Agricultural Science (BCAS) which was established in 1979. The university is located 35 km north of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Its serene campus with beauty and bounty of nature attracts everybody to come to the campus time and again. Its academic excellence mainly relies on its efficient academia and course-credit based trimester system of education that strictly follows academic calendar that has entirely guaranteed timely completion of academic programs. The university maintains strong linkage with various higher educational institutions, universities, research organizations and industries in the country as well as at regional and global levels to conduct globally competitive research using frontier technologies, especially in agriculture.

The university is guided by the philosophy for enhancing the efficiency of farmers and other stakeholders by generating, sharing and imparting advanced agricultural knowledge, experiences along with effective application methods and techniques. BSMRAU offers undergraduate programs, including Bachelor of Science (BS) in Agriculture, Fisheries, Agricultural Economics & Rural Development, Forestry & Environment, Agricultural & Bioresource Engineering and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The university also offers Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 34 departments under 6 (six) faculties out of total 43 departments of the university. Additionally, the MS and PhD programs are managed by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

With passage of time, the university has expanded its scope of education and research into cutting-edge fields. For example, it established the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (IBGE), and the Faculty of Agricultural & Bioresource Engineering. Additionally, two institutes namely the Institute of Climate Change (ICC) and the Institute of Food Safety and Processing (IFSP) are in the process of becoming operational.

In its relatively short history, the university has achieved remarkable success and continues to lay a strong foundation for its future through new initiatives. Over the past two decades, the university has developed 89 high-yielding crop varieties and their associated production technologies. Many of these innovative technologies, particularly those with the highest potential, have been transferred and disseminated to end users through the university’s outreach activities. This integrated approach has elevated the university to the status of a Center of Excellence. The faculty members are dedicated to advancing education and enhancing the quality of research, continuously striving for excellence in both fields.

I sincerely urge everyone, whether at home or abroad, to support and nurture this unique university so that we can elevate it to global standards. Together, let’s work towards making it an internationally recognized and reputable institution in higher education, advanced research, and outreach activities in agricultural science and related fields.
