Professor Umakanta Sarker Ph.D.
Life Sketch
Prof. Umakanta Sarker Ph.D. was born on 1 January 1972 in Boro Shalenga, in the district of Netrakona, Bangladesh. He secured telentfull scholarship in Primary and Junior scholarship examinations. He passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in 1987 and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination in 1989 from Anjuman Model Government High School and Netrakona Government College, respectively, under Dhaka Board secured 1st Division in both cases. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1993 (held in 1997), ensuring first-class with sixth position (out of 402 students). He completed MS in Genetics and Plant Breeding in 2001 from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University and secured a CGPA of 4.00 out of 4.00. He completed his Ph.D. degree from Gifu University, Japan, under JSPS-RONPAKU fellowship.
Prof. Dr. Sarker started his service on 28 February 1999 as a Scientific Officer in Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur. On 16 January 2001, he was appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU). He joined as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding of BSMRAU on 13 June 2006; 1 February 2012; 1 February 2017.
Prof. Dr. Sarker published 78 articles in national and internationally renowned journals. Across the articles, 33 were published in high ranked ISI indexed international journals. He is the reviewer of many international ISI indexed renowned journals, including Scientific Reports-Nature, Environmental and Experimental Botany, Industrial Crops and Products, Food Research International, J. Prof. Dr. Sarker is a life member of Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh, Farmgate, Dhaka, Bangladesh Society of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), and member of Entomological Society of Bangladesh, Horticultural Society of Bangladesh.
Recently, Prof. Dr. Sarker was appointed as an Academic Editor of PLOS one Journal (USA).
