Prof. Alam has about 26 yeras of research experience with BFRI, a research institute under the National Agricultutal Research System (NARS) in Bangladesh. The major areas of research are: (i) Integrated rice-fish and fish-livestock farming; (ii) Breeding, seed and grow-out production of fish (Mystus gulio) and prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii); (iii) Crop diversification (shrimp-fish-crab) in coastal aquaculture system; (iv) Polyculture of carp-fish-prawn; (v) Early maturation of freshwater prawn; (vi) Boosting aquaculture production in homestead ponds; (vii) Cage nursery system for freshwater prawn; (viii) Aquaculture intervention in waterlogged areas.
