Life Sketch

Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, the eldest son of Md. Omar Ali and late Joynab Akhter, was born on 26 February, 1957 in the village of Hasanpur, Keshabpur in the district of Jessore, Bangladesh. He comleted his secondary and higher secondary education respectively from Keshabpur M.L High School in 1972 and Keshabpur College in 1974 in Jessore Secondary and Higher Education Board with distinction. He was admitteed to the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, Bangladesh in 1975 and obtained his B.Sc. Fisheries (Hons) degree in 1979 (exam held in 1981) and M.Sc. Fisheries (Fisheries Biology and Limnology) in 1980 (exam held in 1983) from the Faculty of Fisheries securing First class with First position. He was awarded from the Board and university (talent-pool) scholarship and also National Science and Technology Fellowship during university education. With a World Bank scholarship, he completed his Ph.D. degree in Aquaculture from the University Pertanian Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia in 1993.

Prof. Alam started his professional carrier with the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Bangladesh as a Upazila Fisheries Officer in 1983 and then with the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) as a Scientific Officer in 1985. He continued his job with BFRI up to May 2011, holding the positions of Senior Scientific Officer (1988-1995), Principal Scientific Officer (1995-2001) and Chief Scientific Officer (2001-2011). Considering his significant contribution to fisheries research and technology generation, he was awarded “National Prize” (Gold Medal) in 2009.  He joined BSMRAU in May 2011 as a Professor in the Department of Fisheries Biology and Aquatic Environment, Faculty of Fisheries.
