Academic Qualification for admission into Ph.D. Program

Candidates for admission into a Ph.D degree program must have a Master of Science or an equivalent degree in respective discipline from a recognized University or Institute with excellent GPA or class.
(a) The equivalence of the degree shall be assessed by the equivalence committee of BSMRAU.
(b) The eligibility of the candidate or the opportunity of admission to be MS or Ph.D. program will be determined by the concerned department. Upon recommendation by the concerned department, the candidates will be assessed and selected by the admission committee.

 AEC 501 Microeconomics I (3 cr): Economic theories of consumer and producer behavior: utility theory, price theory, demand and supply, theory of production, price and output determination in product and factor markets under conditions of perfect and imperfect competition; general equilibrium and welfare.
 AEC 502 Macroeconomics I (3 cr): Determination of income, employment, and prices according to classical and neo-classical models; self-adjusting mechanisms and effects of monetary and fiscal policies; national income accounting, inflation, unemployment, expectation, and their policy implications
 AEC 503 Quantitative Methods in Economics (3 cr): Mathematical methods relevant to study of economics, methods of comparative-static analysis; techniques for analyzing optimum values using differential calculus, dynamic analysis and application of integral calculus. Matrix algebra and input-output analysis (Prerequisite AEC 501)
 AEC 510 Agricultural Production Economics (3 cr): Application of concepts and theories relating to agricultural production; input-output relationship, frontier production function and efficiency analysis; choice and decision making under risk; topic relating to utilization of scarce resources most efficiently and effectively for maximization of agricultural productivity; externality problem (Prerequisite AEC 501).
AEC 511 Farm Management (3 cr): Application of economics and business principles to the analysis, planning and organization of agricultural farms and business; use of analytical tools including mathematical programming and forecasting.
AEC 531 Econometrics I (3 cr): General linear model; model specification; estimation procedures including generalized least squares, seemingly unrelated regressions, simultaneous equations; emphasis on applications and interpretations of results, multicollinearity, autocorrelation, heteroscedasticity. (Prerequisite STT 505).
AEC 550 Resource and Environmental Economics (3 cr.): Economics criteria for natural resources and environmental quality management; economics of renewable and nonrenewable resource development and management sources of inefficient allocation of natural resource;
resource scarcity, economics of environmental quality with emphasis on externalities, social cost, pollution abatement and related policy.
AEC 605 Microeconomics II (3 cr): Economic theories of imperfect competition, input market, general equilibrium and welfare economics. (Prerequisite AEC 501 or consent of instructor)
AEC 606 Macroeconomics II (3 cr.): Theory of rational expectations, general equilibrium analysis and macroeconomic modeling for analyzing economic problems. (Prerequisite AEC 502)
AEC 610 Agricultural Policy Analysis (3 cr): Government intervention in agriculture; food policy and food aid; agricultural production, procurement and price policies; input subsidy, price support and privatization issues; employment of surplus agricultural labor; land reforms; agricultural credit, agricultural education and research policies. (Prerequisites AEC 501 and AEC 502).
AEC 620 Advance Agricultural Marketing Analysis (3 cr.): Advanced theoretical and empirical issues relating to the economic analysis of agricultural markets. Major topics include: economic performance of markets under varying competitive assumptions; quantitative methods of modeling and analyzing markets over multiple dimensions (Prerequisite AEC 501)
AEC 630 Econometrics II (3 cr.) Model building, estimation procedures GLS, maximum likelihood, Three stage Least squares, simultaneous equations. Non-linear regression. Probit, Logit, Tobit and multinomial regression. Time series model analysis. (Prerequisite AEC 531)
AEC 640 Rural Development Economics and Policy (3 cr.); Theories of economics change in developed and less developed economies; natural resources and development of rural regions, with emphasis on growth, diversification and instability; resource mobility and spatial aspects of development; poverty and instability; different rural development models; rural development policy.
AEC 641 Theory of Economic Growth and Rural Economics (3 cr.): Analysis of economic growth theories in relation to transformation in rural economy. Theory and methods related to development of rural economy of Bangladesh. Analysis or role of agriculture, non-farm economic activity resources, human capital, local government, rural institutions and government policy.
AEC 642 Food and Nutrition Economics (3 cr.): Explore economic aspects of food safety, quality and nutrition and the ways in which economics can aid understanding of food safety, quality and nutritional issues.
AEC 643 Research Methods and Operations Research (3 cr.): Theory and methods of scientific research in economics and related social sciences. Problem identification, formulation of hypothesis, and empirical techniques of analysis. Management problems involved in planning, operating and controlling systems used in operations, with emphasis on farm and agribusiness applications.
AEC 644 Food and Agribusiness management (3 cr.): Principles of business management, application of conceptual, analytical, problem identification and problem solving skills to develop organizational strategy. AEC 645 Advanced Agricultural Finance (3 cr.): Financial analysis and its application in agribusiness; Use of rations to evaluate financial performance of business farm, capital budgeting techniques as applied to agribusiness decisions, financial risk management and

 AEC 646 International Trade (3 cr.): Introduction to empirical trade analysis, trade policy, product analysis and economic integration, terms of trade; trade restriction, trade liberalization, trade preferences, regional economic groupings, WTO regulations and trade negotiations (Prerequisite AEC 502)
 AEC 647 Economic Analysis and Planning of Agricultural Projects (3 cr.): Concept of project, Project life cycle, Project identification, preparation and implementation, Cost-benefits

 AEC 699 Thesis Research: (Credit to be arranged but not less than 30 cr.): Original thesis research.
Note: Students having Cumulative CGPA below 3.00 will not be allowed to enroll AEC 596, AEC 597, AEC 696 and AEC 697 until he/she raised the cumulative CGPA to 3.00 or above.
