Course Code:  SRA 361     Course Title: General Surgery                Credits: 4.0 (3.0+1.0)

 

Rationale of the Course:

Focusing on clinical presentations of common surgical conditions, this course teaches surgical anatomy to clinical disorders, principles of surgery, and complications of surgical procedures. The course utilizes in-class lectures, lab works and web based materials to have a brief summary of surgical conditions in various animals, different surgical management of inflammation, abscess, cyst, tumor, wound, fracture, ulcer, gangrene, sinus, fistula, burn and scald, fluid therapy and lameness causing diseases. It also covers surgical management of veterinary patients; focus on basic surgical equipment, techniques, procedures and preparation of the surgeon and patient.

 

Course Content:

Theory

  1. Introduction: Definition of common surgical terms and methods of therapy.
  2. Principles of surgery: Preoperative consideration of animals, inflammation, suppuration and abscess formation, affections of uropygeal gland in bird, contusions, fibrosis and sclerosis, wounds, ulceration, necrosis, gangrene, sinus, fistula, cysts, tumors, haematoma, lymphangitis, edema, emphysema, physical lesions, affections of joints, fractures and repair of bones, yoke gall, hemorrhage and homeostasis, burns and scalds, frost bite, shock and its management, cryosurgery, paracentasis, asepsis and antisepsis.
  3. Surgical affections causing lameness: Definition, classification, etiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of different foot diseases causing lameness.
  4. Fluid therapy: Different types of fluids, assessment of fluid deficit, administration of fluids, electrolyte and acid-base balance, transfusion of physiological fluids, blood and blood plasma.

 

Practical

General considerations for surgery

  1. Preparation of patient and surgeon, restraint of animals, identification and use of instruments, sterilization of surgical instruments, dressing, bandaging, sutures and suture materials, different types of knots, operative technique, haemostasis, practice of fluid therapy and blood transfusion.
  2. Passing of stomach tube, probang and catheter in domestic animals, nerve blocking, parenteral injection of drugs, techniques of diagnosis and treatment of lameness, common minor operations in domestic animals, parenthesis abdominis in bovine.

  • Assessment Strategy

Quizzes: Minimum three quizzes will be taken during the term. Usually, all three quizzes will be taken before each mid-term and final examinations. No makeup quiz will be taken; therefore, students are strongly recommended not to miss any quiz.

Two midterm exam and term final exam will be taken as per the examination schedule to be notified by the respective Dean office.

Assignment and report: The students will have to form a group of maximum four members. The topic or case studies will be given as assignment in groups during the class which they have to prepare at home and will submit on or before the due date. No late submission of assignment will be accepted.
