Biography

Dr. Mohammed Zia Uddin Kamal is a Professor in the Department of Soil Science at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU). He is a plant stress physiologist. His research focuses on the impacts of abiotic stress (acidity, alkalinity, drought, salinity, etc.), soil-water pollutants (heavy metals, wastewater, etc.), and air pollutants (O3, CO2, aerosol, particulate matter), oxidative stress, and climate change on plant ecosystems. His future research interests will include climate change, the impact of environmental changes on plants, and novel techniques for plant research and environmental monitoring. He has been a member of “International Environmental leader in Asia and Africa”. So far, he has published 29 research articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals. His published works mainly deal with soil and plant nutrition, abiotic stress, and their mitigation mechanisms and identify novel amendment substances that can be used to correction of problem soils for better crop production. His teaching experience includes 6 different Soil Science courses both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr. Kamal started his professional carrier in 2006, as a Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University – BSMRAU), Gazipur. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 2008, as Associate Professor in 2015, and as Professor in 2020 in the same Department. He has good communicative skills in Bangla, English, and Japanese. He also has the ability to read Arabic. Dr. Kamal is a life member of the Soil Science Society of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Association for Advancement of Science (BAAS). He is also a member of the Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh and the Japanese Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh (JUAAB).

Dr. Kamal was born on 1st October 1977, in the village of Govindar Khil under Begumgonj upazila, Noakhali district. He passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in 1992 from A.K.G. Saidul Haque Ideal High School, Noakhali, and the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination in 1994 from Kopil Uddin Degree College, Luxmipur, under the Comilla board and securing 1st Division in both. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in 1999 (held in 2002) and securing 1st Division. He received his Master of Science (MS) in Soil Science from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in the winter term, 2004. He received his PhD program in Symbiotic science of Environment and Natural Resources in 2015 from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo, Japan under Monbukagakusho scholarship. From October 2012 to September 2015, he also successfully completed the “Education Program Field Oriented Leaders in Environmental Sectors in Asia and Africa (FOLENS)”, Postgraduate program at TUAT, supported by strategic funds for the promotion of science and technology of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan.
